Preventive Care at Melbourn Dental Practice
Preventive dentistry is the modern approach to reducing the amount of dental treatment required to maintain a healthy mouth and help keep your teeth for life.
Tooth loss primarily results from gum disease and decay. A proactive approach to the management of these causes therefore increases the opportunity for prevention.
Whilst it is the ideal way to manage the oral healthcare of children and young adults, it is the recommended approach for everyone – including people with false teeth who can benefit through the early identification of conditions like mouth cancer and denture stomatitis.
Brushing Your Teeth Properly
Learning how to brush your teeth properly is the first step to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Plus, it helps minimize the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, the major causes of tooth loss.
Two Minutes, Twice A Day
To brush your teeth correctly, brush your teeth for 2 minutes using a recommended technique, which includes 30 seconds brushing each section of your mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left) angling the toothbrush head at 45 degrees, both morning and night. It is recommended that you spit don’t rinse after brushing, leaving a residue of toothpaste containing fluoride on the teeth.
Through recommended treatment and a maintenance plan, the combined efforts of the dentist, the dental health educator and patients can help to prevent the need for treatment and so avoid the historical pattern of fillings and extractions.
